THE MTI Chiefs Statement on the process for Natural Gas Development
The Government of New Brunswick has asked us to participate in a process to determine if natural gas development is viable within the Province of New Brunswick. We have a right and an obligation to be part of a process that evaluates the potential impacts this sort of development could have on our lands, waters, and Aboriginal and Treaty Rights.
We know this is an extremely important issue for many of our community members. History has shown us what happens when we are excluded from a process especially around natural gas development.
We are going into this process to listen and ask questions of the experts and our community members. A decision on whether or not to support the idea of allowing companies to come into New Brunswick to pursue and consult on natural gas development will not be made until we have all the necessary data and information to make an informed decision. This cannot happen overnight.
We will have representatives at the technical and decision-making tables. We have made it clear that our participation at these tables does not replace the need for the Government of New Brunswick to consult with the Mi’gmaq if there is a decision to move ahead with natural gas development.
MTI staff and representatives will be visiting MTI communities in the coming months for community sessions to listen and provide information. We encourage our community members to participate. We will provide information on dates in the coming weeks.
