Auditor General’s Report shows GNB is all words and no action to protect Indigenous women,
girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people in New Brunswick
The New Brunswick Auditor General, Paul Martin, has found that the provincial government has done essentially nothing with the Women’s Equality Branch’s report released in 2023, Weaving Our Voices Together (“Weaving our Voices”), which is intended to be the government’s plan in response to the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
The Weaving our Voices report outlines 39 actions to better protect some of the most vulnerable people in this province and the Auditor General concluded that no more than 10 per cent of the plan’s 39 actions were reported as completed at the time of the audit.
Mr. Martin also stated there is absence of sufficient governance and oversight mechanisms to implement the plan.
“The Government of New Brunswick drafted another report to sit and gather dust on the shelf. Consistently, government will come into our communities, tell us they’re listening and are committed to making our lives better, and then nothing gets done once a report is a drafted. In the case of Weaving Our Voices Together, this lack of action continues to cost lives and lead to more mistrust”, said Chief Rebecca Knockwood, of Amlamgog.
The Mi’gmaq Chiefs would like to thank the Auditor General and his office for the work they did and bringing this to the public’s attention and for the recommendations he put forth to the provincial government.
Chief Rebecca stated, “I will make myself available to sit on the Advisory Committee to ensure the work is done to protect Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people in New Brunswick.”
